Although the number of famers markets has increased nearly 50 percent since 2006, access to fruits and vegetables in farmers markets remains limited for low-income families. Live Well Alabama partners with farmers markets across the state to provide food demonstrations and facilitate vendor acceptance of SNAP benefits and senior farmers market nutrition program vouchers.
Live Well Alabama partnered with 37 farmers market initiatives in 30 Alabama counties reaching more than 5,000 residents each week in 2016.
- Policy changes included addition of locations throughout the state and adaptation to locations and improvements in days and hours of operation to make farmers markets more convenient.
- Systems changes entailed implementing trainings to support vendor acceptance of SNAP-benefits, which resulted in expansion of the number of vendors accepting SNAP at farmers markets.
- Promotional changes included installation of signage to increase awareness of the addition of vendors accepting SNAP benefits. Food demonstrations and family-friendly education materials were also implemented to increase awareness of preparation and uses of fresh produce.
